Do you have a display home?
Yes, we have our “Zed” design on display at our office located in Darra, Brisbane.
‘The Urban Crib’ display home – coming soon
You can view more information on our display homes here
Can I customise my order?
To keep our Cribs affordable, we take advantage of the economies of scale that come from creating cribs to consistent specifications. Our production line is streamlined by our ability to build several homes at any given time.
One-off designs require new research and development, extensive internal and external plans, engineering certificates, and smaller amounts of unique materials – all of which increase the price and slow down the manufacturing process.
For these reasons, we recommend using the pre-designed floor plans listed on our website. If you are looking for something a little different, send us an enquiry, as we do have a number of past designs that aren’t listed on our website.
What are the benefits of going modular with Urban Cribs?
Truly indestructible
BAL12.5 fire rated, cyclone + earthquake resistant, termite proof, easy to raise above flood levels.
Efficiency
Have a move in ready home is only 4 months, with minimal site works required
Affordability
60% cheaper than standard construction homes
Quality
NCC compliant, high-quality materials, constructed by certified trades
Minimal environmental impact
Our homes use fewer materials and produce less waste than standard construction, meaning that there is less embodied energy in each home. Smaller homes also result in cheaper operating fees, and less impact on the environment.
What's the difference between an Urban Cribs home and a kit home?
Our Cribs come pre-assembled and just need to be installed on your site. Typically, kit homes are materials supplied with a plan which you will still need to assemble and fit out.
Are Urban Cribs termite resistant?
Each of our Cribs is assembled from a steel frame with no structural timber in the construction, which makes them termite resistant. (NOTE: Owners must do their own inspections or engage a professional to check for breaches)
What is the external cladding made of?
Our ‘Standard’ external cladding is created from high-quality fibre cement sheeting or planking, design specific.
Is condensation a problem with Urban Cribs?
No – but like all homes, your Crib should be allowed to ‘breathe’, through ventilation or mechanical extractors.
Condensation is caused when water vapour comes into contact with cold surfaces and condenses to form dampness or water droplets. Many things can contribute to the amount of water vapour in a home. It can be produced by appliances such as clothes dryers, and even by people breathing. Condensation can be a problem in any building, particularly in modern buildings that are built to minimise energy wastage so are better insulated and more airtight.
The level of humidity in your Crib will also depend on the climate. Warm air holds more water vapour than cool air, so condensation is more common in cooler climates when homes are internally heated. If you are putting your home in a cool climate you may need to install a de-humidifier, reverse cycle air-conditioner, or may require a larger energy recovery system.
Can Cribs be fire rated higher than BAL12.5?
Absolutely, our team have the expertise to build the cribs to BAL-29 and BAL-40 if required. However, this will be an added cost and must be discussed with our team prior to production.
Are the Cribs insulated?
Yes, all our Cribs are insulated, which may reduce the need for heating and cooling depending on the climate you live in. We use Rockwool batts in the walls and ceiling. All the windows are double glazed, which minimises heat loss and transfer.
Where are Urban Cribs homes made?
Our homes are produced in our Australian-owned factory in Southern China. Our own Australian tradespeople work alongside our factory staff, managing projects that are shipped all over the world.
Do your modular units need to be elevated on stumps?
We encourage our modular homes to be installed on stump footings, or resting on sleepers to allow breathable space underneath the units. However, this is not a requirements for ‘The Urban Crib’, which is constructed on skids and can be placed directly on the ground.
What is the internal height of the homes?
To keep our homes affordable, 2.4m is the standard ceiling height.
Transport & Installation
How are Urban Cribs transported?
Our Cribs are built to international standard sizes for shipping, so they can be shipped and transported by road – and in some cases, by rail.
Our Cribs are well protected during transit, completely covered in a wrap and plywood to protect the glass. Any damage caused from shipping before pick up or installation will be repaired by Urban Cribs.
How soon will my home be ready?
You can expect your new home to be ready in as little as 3-4 months!
Production will commence once you have paid your deposit. Production time is about 8-10 weeks. Overall, from the date of ordering, to the date that your home is ready to be collected, you can expect to wait around 14-16 weeks.
You will be given an indication of the commencement and completion dates before you place your order.
How is installation completed?
1. Transport & placement
Unless discussed prior with the Urban Cribs team, the client will be responsible for the transport/delivery of their modular home. Transport can be done with a side swing truck. If the site is hard to access, franna cranes may be required to position your home in its desired location. The Urban Cribs team can assist in providing guidance and contacts for this process.
2. Connection to services
‘The Urban Crib’ can be supplied as a ‘plug and play’ design, meaning that once the home is placed in your desired location, a standard hose can be connected to provide water to the home. Electricity will be provided by the pre-installed solar system.
We can also supply our homes with standard plumbing and electrical connections, to be connected to mains services. The client will be responsible for the installation of these services.
Is air conditioning or heating installed?
As standard, our modular homes do not come with air conditioning installed, however it is available as an optional extra for turnkey package homes.
We have prioritised creating well insulated homes that require minimal heating and cooling, with double glazed windows and wall, ceiling, and floor insulation as standard.

Mobile Homes - Off Grid
How do I connect to electricity?
Our ‘off-grid’ models have the ability to literally plug into your power source using an electrical lead. If you are choosing a fully off-grid solution we can supply you with an additional solar package. Usable power generated by the solar panels may depend on the area you live in and how much power is used on a daily basis. You can also consider using a generator as a backup power source, in case of overcast or rainy days.
What is the size of the solar battery?
Our solar package comes with 6kwh lithium batteries. They are designed to last for two days although this will vary with usage.
Can I connect gas to the pod?
Yes, we can provide a gas cooktop & gas instantaneous hot water system. Both connected to an LPG gas bottle (not supplied) on the outside of your pod. If this is your preferred option, please let us know.
How do I connect to water?
Our off-grid models are designed for simple installation. All you will need to do is attach the hose from your Crib into the water source. If you are going fully off-grid we suggest installing water tanks so you can collect your water and use as needed.
How does the composting toilet work in the Off-grid Models?
A composting toilet decomposes human waste into humus by using micro-organisms. The toilet installed in our pod is an automatic continuous process unit. The waste is processed inside the unit and the finished compost falls into a tray at the bottom of the unit. The waste tray is emptied every six to 12 weeks depending on usage.
An efficient aerobic composting process and fluid evaporation are automated by a mixing mechanism, ventilation system and heating elements controlled thermostatically. The finished compost can safely be reintroduced to gardening. However, it cannot be used to cultivate vegetables.
Our selected composting toilets comply with Australian Standards.
What does plug & play mean?
Our plug & play off-grid range creates a quick and simple connection system to water and electricity. Power is connected via a standard power lead and water is connected via a standard hose. Simply plug the services into your home in a matter of minutes.
